Argos 7.3 now available

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Today we’re pleased to announce the available of Argos 7.3, which adds these features:

Sharp Global Printing

Users with multiple Sharp MFPs are now able to send a print job to one machine then release it on another.  Allows users to avoid waiting for a machine to finish a large print run, and is useful when printers are separated by large distances.

Sharp Hybrid Logon

Provides an extra layer of logon security for Sharp MFPs.  Users who enter a PIN must then enter their domain password before they are granted access to the machine.

Scheduled Reports

Users can now set up a scheduled task which will email a PDF containing Argos report results.  Reports will be automatically generated hourly, daily, weekly or monthly.

Version Notification

Argos Manager will now notify users when a new version of Argos 7 is available for download.  It is a convenient way to get access to the latest features and advancements.

Argos 7.2 and Argos Secure Release now available

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

When we roll the “tenths place” odometer on our version numbers, it usually means something good has arrived. And something good has arrived in the form of Argos Secure Release. This is a long-standing top feature request, and it’s one we wanted to get right.

What’s Secure Release?

Argos Secure Release runs as embedded software on the front panel of compatible multi-function peripherals (MFPs), where users are required to log in via a numeric “PIN” identification code, or via a proximity “swipe” card. Argos can automatically synchronize users and PIN codes from back-end sources, automating maintenance and keeping I.T. costs low.

Once authenticated, users are presented with a list of print jobs awaiting release. Once a user chooses one or more print jobs for printing, Argos sends the selected jobs to the printer for completion. Users can also delete unwanted print jobs from the MFP front panel. Unreleased print jobs are automatically removed after 24 hours; administrators can change the cleanup interval for longer duration.

By holding print jobs rather than immediately printing them, Argos lets companies use printers in public areas to print confidential documents. Traditionally, those documents would sit in a paper tray for all to see. With Argos Secure Release, those documents are only printed in the presence of the original user. By requiring users to release jobs at the device, Argos Secure Release also eliminates frivolous and unnecessary printing, and lowers costs.

What do I need?

For now Argos Secure Release runs on Canon MEAP devices. We’re working on versions for Xerox, Sharp, and more, as we speak. We’ll be releasing those additional embedded clients as they pass our quality testing. Argos Secure Release piggybacks off our existing Argos OnBoard solutions, so you’ll need Argos 7.2, users and PIN codes, just like normal.

What else is new?

  • New single-sign-on capabilities for Sharp OSA devices. Sepialine is actively co-developing solutions with software developer members of the Sharp OSA community to deliver unified authorization capabilities for OSA applications.
  • Pcounter integration, allowing Argos to work with the popular Pcounter software product to track Novell NetWare printing.
  • Numerous minor improvements and bug fixes.

How do I get it?

Argos 7.1 now available

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Today we’re very pleased to announce the immediate availability of Argos 7.1. For those who follow, you’ll notice that we’ve turned the odometer from 7.0.x to 7.1 — this is a big one and it’s been a while in the works.

Color is the big news for 7.1. Argos now detects color printing. Color is everywhere in Argos now, and it’s not just an afterthought. Rather than just multiplying media types (“Small Format B&W” and “Small Format Color”), Argos lets you maintain one media (“Small Format”) that can carry both color and black-and-white pricing data. For those upgrading from Argos 7.0.x it means a shift in the way you think about and configure Argos. We have an upgrade guide here, and if your Argos maintenance contract is current we won’t mind one bit if you call us before upgrading and make sure everything’s in order first.

User aliasing is another big one, although it probably doesn’t seem as flashy as color. Much as we all hate to admit it, we all have multiple identities in computer-land. We might log in as “msmith” but Active Directory knows us as “domain\msmith”  — and if you’re on a Mac, identities multiply quickly. Argos 7.1 lets you glue each user’s multiple identities into one single user, which is key when you’re trying to configure user behaviors in Argos. It also makes Argos licensing a whole lot simpler to manage.

Billing periods acknowledge that not everyone marches to the beat of the Gregorian calendar. Mid-month billing cycles and multiple cycles per month. It’s in Argos 7.1.

Active Directory import lets you synchronize your users from Active Directory, a much-requested capability now in Argos 7.1.

Sticky favorites drawer keeps your favorites visible or hidden depending on how you last left them in the Argos Desktop Client. Also much-requested, it’s here in Argos 7.1.

Argos OnBoard for Sharp gets a facelift. Our embedded copy and print tracking solution for Sharp OSA takes advantage of OSA 4 technology on compatible models with a new login screen that’s crisp, clear, and to the point.

There are lots of other small improvements and fixes, too numerous to mention, that befit a major version upgrade. We hope you like it, and thanks for your ongoing support, interest, and ideas.

Argos 7.0.10 is here

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Today we’re pleased to announce the release of Argos 7.0.10. The big-ticket item here — something that’s literally years in the making — is phone tracking. There are lots of other new features, plus the usual minor fixes and improvements.

Track your phone calls

Argos 7 now tracks phone calls. If you’ve never thought about tracking phone calls, now’s a good time to consider it. Like printing and copying, voice communication is a huge potential revenue source for firms that charge for reimbursables. Up until now, media types in Argos have been paper-oriented. Starting today we introduce a new family of phone-based media that are duration-based instead of dimension- and page-based. Argos phone tracking measures the length of your calls.

A better way to bill for phone calls

When we introduced copy tracking, we wanted to avoid the pitfalls of traditional cost recovery that we experienced firsthand as practicing architects all those years ago. Pre-billed cost recovery — where you’re required to enter a job code before you can work — is immensely frustrating and rife with abuse. If you’ve ever lived with call accounting before, you probably lived the pre-billing life: your phone system prevents you from making outside calls until you punch in a job code. And if you’re like most people, you quickly learn the override code (99999, anyone?) and use it forevermore.

Argos works differently. You make your call as usual. Then, when you hang up, the Argos Desktop Client pops up on your desktop and requires you to allocate the call to a job code. It’s the same workflow that makes Argos Copy Tracking great, and it’s available for phone tracking today. Based on rules, Argos determines whether the call was internal, local, long-distance, or international. You get to decide costing for each, then run reports that show your printing, copying, and phone calls all presented together in a clear, logical way.

Compatibility

Today we’re offering support for Cisco Call Manager and 3Com NBX systems. NEC support is up next. Only those few? You use something else? That’s okay. We’ll provide you with a tool to capture the output stream of your phone system. Send the results to us and we’ll deliver a driver. Over time we’ll support more systems. It turns out that many PBX and phone systems use a common reporting scheme called CDR, so it’s actually quite likely that we’ll be able to support your system, even if it’s not listed.

More 7.0.10 features

Separate copy and scan billing

This is actually an important capability. Argos 7 introduced the idea of different handling for different kinds of jobs. For example you could track printing silently but copying interactively. Initially we provided three job groups:

  • Printing
  • Copying and scanning
  • Phone and fax

Some customers want to handle scanning differently from copying; our original Argos 7 scheme didn’t allow this. As of today, scanning is separated from copying so you can set behaviors more granularly.

Page impression tracking on Xerox

Most Argos copy tracking solutions can distinguish between simplex and duplex activity. You can assign each to a different media type and, hence, charge differently for each. In practice, though, many customers pay for their MFP equipment based on impressions — the number of page sides that pass through a device. A simplex job is one impression; a duplex job is two. Argos OnBoard for Xerox 7.0.10 introduces per-impression pricing, which lets Argos more closely model the way you actually pay for your equipment. Look for per-impression pricing capability to find its way into our other OnBoard solutions in the coming months.

New reports

Phone tracking required some new reporting capabilities, so we took the opportunity to improve the way the reports work. Take a look; hopefully you’ll like it.

Argos 7.0.8 is here

Friday, July 9th, 2010

We’re pleased to announce that Argos 7.0.8 is ready. What happened to Argos 7.0.7, you ask? We decided to skip it, rolling its features into 7.0.8.

Introducing Argos for Xerox

The lead story for 7.0.8 is new Argos for Xerox embedded software, which we’ve detailed here. Impressively (for us, as developers), Argos for Xerox works on both small and large format Xerox devices.

Other highlights include:

  • Improvements to Argos for Konica Minolta that allow you to configure more than one communication server. That means better fault tolerance.
  • Improvements to Argos for KIP that take advantage of KIP’s new log format (available as part of the latest KIP firmware). The new format allows us to much more accurately report page dimensions and quantities than in the past.
  • The return of the Dashboard. In Argos 6, administrators could see all the users with pending jobs right on the Argos Manager home page. We didn’t realize how much people missed it, so now it’s back for Argos 7.
  • Previously, billing code visibility rules were only available for your top-tier billing codes. Lower tiers were either all visible, or all hidden. Argos 7.0.8 extends visibility rules down to the lower tiers.
  • Auto backup creates nightly backups of your database.

As always, there are dozens of minor improvements and fixes, too. 7.0.8 is available for download here.
